GROSSE ILE, MI — Grosse Ile rescue crews saved a dog from the icy Detroit River on Monday, according to police.
Police said Stella, a six-month-old Australian Shepherd, ran onto the ice covered river after crossing East River Road in Grosse Ile on Monday afternoon.
When officers arrived, they saw Stella standing on the ice roughly 350 yards offshore, according to police.
Officials tried to guide Stella back to shore using a drone, but police said that didn't work. So officials began walking onto the ice, but quickly determined it was too dangerous, according to police.
Officials then turned to the fire department's air boat, which scared Stella as she kept running away, according to police.
As officials were returning to shore, Stella fell into the water and they immediately turned back and rescued her, according to police.
Grosse Ile Police Sgt. Eric Vazquez told WXYZ the owners told him they had a fence around the yard, but there was a hole in it that allowed Stella to escape.
