SOUTHGATE, MI — A man was shot and killed during a shoplifting investigation outside a Meijer store in metro Detroit on Saturday, according to police.
The shooting happened at 3:45 p.m. at the Meijer located on 16300 Fort Street in Southgate, according to police.
Police Chief Mark Mydlarz told reporters officers found the suspects, a 34-year-old man and 42-year-old woman, in the west portion of the parking lot.
As officers tried to stop the two, Mydlarz said the man pulled out a sharp object and "engaged our officers."
That's when one of the officers fired a shot that struck the man, Mydlarz said.
He was taken to a nearby hospital where he died, Mydlarz said.
Mydlarz said no officers were injured in the shooting.
The woman was arrested in connection with the incident, Mydlarz said.
Investigators were unsure about the relationship between the man and woman.
The officer will be placed on administrative leave pending the outcome of the investigation, Mydlarz said.
Mydlarz said the investigation has been turned over to the Michigan State Police.
