ECORSE, MI — A 4-year-old girl has died after she was hit by a train last Sunday in Ecorse, according to a Fox 2 Detroit report.
The girl was one of three victims who were struck by the train near Salliotte and 5th Street around 6:30 p.m. Sunday, according to police.
The other two victims, a 10-year-old girl and her 32-year-old mother, were listed in critical condition at a nearby hospital, according to police.
Investigators believe the family was trying to cross the railroad tracks near a stopped train when they were struck by another passing train.
They do not believe alcohol or drugs played a role in the incident.
Police did not release any other details.
Ecorse Police Chief Derran Shelby warned about the dangers of crossing railroad tracks.
"Our thoughts are with this family and everyone affected by this incident," Shelby said. "I urge everyone to exercise extreme caution around railroad tracks. A stopped train can block your view of another approaching train, and railroad equipment can move unexpectedly. Never climb over, crawl under, or pass between railroad cars."
