Beloved Metro Detroit Pasty Shop Closing After More Than 30 Years

The family announced with "incredible heavy hearts" that it will close its doors for good on March 31.

SOUTHGATE, MI — A beloved downriver pasty shop is closing after more than 30 years.

The Pasty Shop, located along Northline Road in Southgate, announced with "incredible heavy hearts" that it will close its doors for good on March 31.

The family said they have worked tirelessly through changing times, rising costs and long days to keep the shop open, because "this shop wasn’t just about selling pasties, it was about honoring the family who built it in the community that supported it."

The small shop, known for its handmade pasties, which are essentially a meat and veggie-filled pie). Over the years, it became a "place filled with tradition: early mornings, flower-covered aprons, laughter, and generations of loyal customers who became friends," the family said.

With the family retiring, they hoped someone would buy the business and carry on the name, recipes and heart behind it.

A non-profit business did step forward with plans to buy the shop and "preserve this legacy," but the building's landlord hiked the rent and the deal fell through, the family said.

"Unfortunately, during the transition of this process, the landlord increased the rent by 150 percent, making it financially impossible for a nonprofit to move forward with the agreement; because of this, instead of passing the torch, we must now close the chapter," the family said.

The shop will be open this week (Tuesday-Friday) with hot pasties, before shifting to frozen pasties so the family can sell their equipment. After that, the freezer will be stocked with partially cooked pasties for the final two weeks, the family said.

Regular beef, carrot, rutabaga, chicken peas and carrots and chicken broccoli cheese will be stocked. Any special orders will be first come first serve until the freezer is all sold out, the family said.

"We are deeply grateful for every customer who walked through our doors every holiday order every kind word and every shared memory over these 26 years you allow this family tradition to thrive for more than two decades," the family said.
