Carlson Ends Memorable Trojans Baseball Season

Trenton just couldn't get it done Saturday in the first game of districts, falling to the host Marauders 4-3.

The Downriver League runner-up is out of the MHSAA baseball tournament.

The Trojans baseball team was upset by Carlson Saturday morning, 4-3, at Carlson's home field.

"I've always said to advance in the state tournament, you're going to have to get breaks here and there," said Trenton coach Todd Szalka. "We just didn't get them today."

Carlson jumped out to an early two-run lead before Trenton finally got on the board in the third when an RBI sacrifice fly by junior Derek Berger scored senior Kris Wilson.

It was back and forth from there on out with Carlson tacking on another run in the top of the fifth before Wilson homered in the bottom half of the inning and senior Alex Bokatzian scored on another RBI from Berger.

The sixth inning is what sealed the game. The Marauders got some of those breaks Coach Szalka was hoping his team would get. Two bloop singles put a runner in scoring position and allowed Carlson to score the winning run.

Carlson's sophomore pitcher Jeremy Bagnall, who pitched a complete game, shutdown the Trojans in their last two at bats.

"We got the best effort out of every team we played this season," said Szalka, speaking of his team. "Out of our 12 losses, about 10 of them were one-run games."

"We had a good season, we just couldn't get it done today."

Trenton junior Blake Wojtala took the loss for the Trojans and Bagnall the win for Carlson.
