Firefighters To Skate For Charity

Hockey Teams from the Riverview and Trenton fire departments will square off in their first charity hockey game this Sunday.

The guys who are used to battles in the flames will now have a battle on the ice in this Sunday's first charity hockey game between the and Riverview fire departments to benefit the Trenton Food Bank.

"It's our first time doing this thing and we think it's going to be a lot of fun," said Trenton firefighter and paramedic Jason Martyniak, who is helping organize the event.

Martyniak, 28, said that the Trenton team will be formed with about six to eight guys rounded up from the Trenton, Wyandotte, Southgate and Woodhaven stations. Riverview, which has a larger fire department, will be the only supplier of their team's roster.

Martyniak, who has worked for the Trenton Fire Department for six years, said that a lot of the guys that will play Sunday have played together in leagues and open skates, so it should be a fun, friendly and quality game.

The game will start at 4 p.m., admission is $4 per person and children age 4 and under are free. The event will be at the , 2901 West Road. Martyniak said that for the first year, those in attendance will be treated to a good, competitive game and extra entertainment could be added in coming years as the event evolves.

"This being the first time we're doing this and all, we just didn't want to take too much on," said Martyniak. "Hopefully, we can add more elements as the years go by."
