Former Trenton Star J.J. Putz Beats The Tigers

The two-time all-state pitcher returns home and gets the save for the Arizona Diamondbacks Friday night.

It was a special night at Comerica Park as former Tiger greats Kirk Gibson and Alan Trammell returned home for the retirement of Sparky Anderson's #11 jersey, but they weren't the only ones to return home. Arizona Diamondbacks and former Trenton Trojan pitcher J.J. Putz got the save against Detroit.

Putz was raised in Trenton and graduated from Trenton High School in 1995, the same year he won all-state honors for the second consecutive year and was crowned Mr. Baseball of the state of Michigan--the prestigious award given to the state's best player.

After the game, Putz told reporters that he along with everyone else thought that the only thing to make the night better was if Sparky himself could have been there.

"I remember it like it was yesterday," Putz told CBSsports.com referring to watching the late Tigers coach (who died Nov. 4, 2010) and the Tigers win the World Series as a 7-year-old. "Tiger fans are a little robbed because Sparky couldn't be here."
