Former Trojan Bass Earns MLB Rookie Distinction

Trenton native Anthony Bass posts the second-lowest earned run average for a rookie in San Diego Padres history.

Trenton native and , 23, rookie pitcher for the San Diego Padres, has earned the second-lowest earned run average for a rookie in Padres pitching history, according to a story in the Wayne State University newspaper The South End.

“Humbling,” Bass said in The South End, when asked of his achievement. “If you were to tell me I would have the second lowest ERA of a pitcher in the history of the Padres I would have said you’re crazy. I am very proud of what I have accomplished to this point.”

Bass from the San Antonio Missions in Double-A, where he had posted a 6-3 record. in a game against the Colorado Rockies in which he pitched five innings of five-hit baseball while only allowing one run for the San Diego Padres to pick up the win.

After his major-league debut, he was sent back to Triple A-Tucson to hone his craft. Bass, who is currently pitching in the Arizona Fall League during the offseason, was promoted to the Padres for a second time July 1, and against the Rockies on Sept. 21. Bass finished out the season with the Padres, going 2-0 with a 1.68 ERA in 27 appearances. In his his third start for the Peoria Javelinas in the Arizona Fall League on Oct. 18, Bass surrendered two runs on five hits while striking out eight batters over five innings in the Peoria Javelinas' 4-3 loss to the Surprise Saguaros, according to the mlb.com story.
