Looking Sharp at Timber's Salon
For more than 30 years, Timber's Salon has offered its clients up-to-date styles at a fair price.
It is nearing noon on a hot June weekday, and business is starting to pick up at .
According to Timber Baun-Crooks, who has ran the salon located on West Road since she opened it in May of 1981, things have been busy since the first day that it opened its doors.
“I had a huge clientele, so we’ve maintained that and gotten new customers,” said Timber, who had worked for another salon for a few years before deciding to open her own.
With things keeping busy, Timber has built her staff up to the 16 people who work there today. They work as hairstylists, nail stylists, pedicurists, and receptionists. The salon gets many more appointments than walk-ins, she said, but if they have an opening they will still take a walk-in from someone who has not phoned ahead.
While things tend to be pretty quiet in the morning, from noon to 8 p.m. business picks up. Timber mused that this may be due to people coming in after work.
Over the years, Timber’s Salon has become known for continually offering information and educating their clients on the newest fashion trends. What’s more, the staff there has developed a reputation for their makeovers. Here, Timber said, they will “take someone who doesn’t know what to do with their hair” and assist them in coming up with a look they may not have thought of, with different styling and colors.
Timber has been a mainstay in the Trenton community her whole life. Born and raised in the city, she had gone to school here and had lived elsewhere for a time before coming back, opening her business, and eventually becoming a member of the Trenton city council, where she has served for 18 years.
“I like the idea of being a part of the community where I work,” she said. “I wasn’t happy with any other city, and wanted to get back to my roots.”
