Spring Is in the Air ... Let the Games Begin

This week we look at the girls track team.

Go on, smell the air. Listen to the singing of the birds and feel the subtle warmth of the sunshine on your face.

OK, listen, I know ... it’s still freezing and it’s the end of March.

That, however, means little to the sports teams at Trenton High gearing up for the spring campaign.

Players and coaches from baseball, softball, track and field, soccer and tennis teams have been braving the inclement weather and are getting set to put their best effort forward this season and represent their school and the community to the best of their ability.

Sure, this Pick of the Week section normally highlights a game or two worthy of checking out, but we’re reasonable people. The odds of you sitting along the third baseline to catch a game this weekend (when the forecasted high is 38 degrees) is probably pretty slim unless you have a kid playing in the game.

That said, for the next few weeks anyhow, until the weather breaks some and the thermometer rises past 50 degrees, we’re going to use this little space on Patch.com to give you a brief glimpse of what you might be looking at when you go out to these contests.

This week, we’re going to take a look at the girls track and field team from Trenton High.

Last season, the squad wrapped up the campaign 8-1 in the Downriver League, good enough for a top-3 finish in a very competitive league.

This season, coach Nelson MacNicol returns a solid group of athletes, including seniors Alexis Charping, Natalie Dumais, Marissa Rowland and Sarah Wilder.

This group is expected to pace the squad all season long and, with the help of a promising group of underclassmen, should be in the thick of a league title chase yet again.

“I believe that Woodhaven is the favorite on our league,” the coach said. “But we’ll be fighting it out with them, Wyandotte, Allen Park and Southgate.”
