State Cancels All 2015 Bird Shows Over Avian Flu Fears

Don’t expect to see prize-winning poultry at this year’s state fair.

Michigan has canceled all bird shows this year because of fears surrounding the avian flu, according to a press release from the state’s Department of Agricultural and Rural Development. The decision came after Michigan’s agricultural department consulted with the Michigan Association for Fairs and Exhibitions and Michigan 4-H.

The ban affects any event in the state that has birds from different locations comingling, including poultry and waterfowl exhibitions, swap meets, petting zoos at fairs, game bird and waterfowl displays, and Miracle of Life exhibits.

“The rapid spread of these avian flu viruses is historic and has impacted more than a dozen states across the U.S.,” veterinarian Dr. James Averill of the state’s agriculture department stated in the press release. “While there are currently no known cases of HPAI in Michigan, commitment to protecting the health of all of the state’s poultry flocks—backyard and commercial farmers—led us to making this difficult decision.”

State agencies are working together to monitor any spread of the avian flu throughout Michigan’s poultry, livestock, wildlife and citizens. These department encourage residents to help by doing the following:

• • Call the Michigan Department of Natural Resources at 517-336-5030 if they notice the death of three or more wild birds.
  • If your backyard poultry flock has a high death loss or consistent pattern of death loss in a short period of time, report it to the Michigan Department of Agricultre and Rural Development at 800-292-3939 or 517-373-0440 for after-hours emergencies.
