Trenton Girls Soccer Falls To Dexter

A lopsided 4-0 victory ends the season for the Trojanettes in the regional semi-finals at Chelsea High School.

After beating Dexter in the first game of the season, the Trenton faithful feeling hopeful in Wednesday's rematch at Chelsea High School quickly had their hopes dashed. And it never stopped.

The Dreadnaughts dominated play from the opening whistle getting on the scoreboard just over two minutes into the game when sophomore standout Olivia Vollmers got behind the defense and put one past Trenton keeper Laura Basco.

The Trojanettes didn't go down without a little fight, not giving up another goal for the rest of the half, but the second half is when Dexter found the scoring touch.

"I was surprised how flat we were to start the game," said Trenton coach John Horrigan. "We just were not ready to go to start this game and you know what, that's on me. Not on them. I didn't have them ready."

Fourteen minutes into the second half, Dexter's Bethany Shiguango put her team up 2-0. Six minutes later, Victoria Pepper scored on a beautiful shot that caught the bottom of the crossbar and barely bounced over the goal line. Vollmers got her second goal of the game with a laser to the far post from the left corner of the 18-yard line after a beautiful give-and-go pass.

Dexter controlled play for most of the game with crisp passing and playing a more physical game. But Horrigan said the biggest difference on a humid 90-degree day, was conditioning.

"Our girls will have to see that they were in better shape than us and use that as motivation this off-season," said Horrigan. "A lot changes in a year. That's a former state championship team right there...they were awesome today."

The Trojanettes will graduate eight seniors three starters. Horrigan said that he's proud of how his girls came together as a team, proud of his seniors, and vows that his team will be back next season.

Trenton finishes the season 12-8-2.
