Trenton Girls Tennis Team Ends Season With Optimism
The Lady Trojans will return with a new solid base of players for next year and beyond.
At Grosse Ile, the Trenton Lady Trojans competed in the girls tennis regional event, with a bid to play in the state tennis tournament on the line. The Trojans had played in the event last year and were looking to repeat their performance this year.
Unfortunately for Trenton, a young team could not muster up the wins needed, and they will have to look forward to next season instead. No Trojan player, in singles or doubles, made a finals match.
For numbers two and three singles players Miranda Madro and Gabrielle Wojtola, their days were over before they even began. In the regional tournament, you have to play a preliminary round, then the quarterfinals, semi-finals, and then the finals. Both girls played admirably, but lost in the preliminary round. The number four singles player Diana Kurteshi was able to dispatch of New Boston Huron in the preliminary round, but fell victim to Riverview in the quarterfinal match.

The biggest singles match of the day came from number one singles player Megan Solano. Solano started the day off with a bye in the first round, and then beat Riverview with a clean victory. The semi-final match against Grosse Ile’s Laurel Galecki proved to be one to remember. Solano’s play is dictated by being able to hit fast, hard shots. Galecki continued to hit lob shots in the air in an effort to frusturate Solano. While it was a great idea, the rallies that the two girls had with one another were not fast paced as some would have liked. Shockingly, the method worked, something Solano admitted to.
“Being a number one single, I have to be more aggressive at the net," Solano said. "The way she hit the ball, I let her get inside my head and it cost me the match.”

Solano had a great year overall, finishing as a league champ. The success is not much of a surprise as she was undefeated last year as Trenton’s number two singles player, suffering her only loss in the second round of the state tournament.
On the doubles side of events, things did not go much better for the Trojans. For number one doubles partners Molly Wilkie and Liz Sheeran, the disappointment was obvious. They were able to beat Divine Child in the quarterfinals, but lost to a tough Livonia Ladywood team in the semi-finals. Coach Lynne Herman was disappointed with the way the two lost their games.
“I’m happy for some of our players that were able to come out and play a tournament of this magnitude, it will help us in the long run," Herman said. "I am disappointed in the way that Megan Solano and my number one doubles team played.”
Rounding out play for the Trojans were number two doubles Mariesa Desartis and Danielle DiPong who lost to Riverview in the quarterfinals, number three doubles Jordan Sutherby and Hannah Scharboneau who lost in the Quarterfinals to Chelsea, and number four doubles Tiffany Thompson and Alyssa Berry who lost in the quarterfinals to Grosse Ile.
While the finish might not have been what she wanted, Herman was happy and optimistic about the future of the program.
“I enjoyed the season this year," Herman said. "We started a good new base of tennis for the future. To teach these new players, was not the most ideal, simply because the weather was not great for the season.”
For Sheeran, her high school career may have ended at the regional event, but there was one thing that was certain according to her.
“It has been a good four years, and I am going to miss everyone,” Sheeran said.
While one chapter closes, another one opens for the Trenton High School girls tennis team.
