Trenton Hockey Dominates Wyandotte 5-1

With three first-period goals, the Trenton Trojans stunned the defending Division 2 state champion Wyandotte Roosevelt Bears and cruised to a 5-1 win.

grabbed an early lead Wednesday night at home, then never let up en route to knocking off defending Division 2 state champion 5-1.

The matchup was the first meeting of the season for the two Downriver rivals, both of which are new members of the .

The last time Trenton (5-2) and Roosevelt (1-4) squared off was on Feb. 28, which was during last season’s district playoffs. That night , bouncing Trenton from the postseason.

Trojans senior defenseman Cory Dunn, who had three first-period points Wednesday night, said he was looking forward to playing the Bears again and getting revenge.

“Ever since Feb. 28, it’s always been in my head to come back this year and give it right back to them,” Dunn said.

Getting things started for Trenton, Dunn scored an unassisted goal at 11:39 of the first period, putting his team up 1-0.

About three minutes later, Trojans senior forward Cory Seychel slipped one past the right pad of Wyandotte goaltender Dalan Bulchak, assisted by Dunn and senior forward Joey Russo. 

Less than one minute later, the Trojans went up 3-0 with a power play goal from senior forward Michael Lesko. An assist on the goal went to Dunn again, as well as senior defenseman Derek Berger.

Early in the second period, Trenton extended its lead even more with a goal from Russo, with assists coming from Seychel and sophomore forward Andrew Sawyer.

“We came out banging and never let up,” Dunn said of his team’s performance. “We kept pounding on them.”

Midway through the second period, Wyandotte got on the board with its lone goal of the night, which was scored by forward Jake Carlisle.

An early third-period goal from Sawyer, assisted by Russo, was the fifth goal of the night for the Trojans, the most they have scored all season.

Head coach Mike Turner said he was pleased his team found the back of the Roosevelt net so often, but said there is still plenty of room for improvement this season.

“Our guys have been struggling to score goals and tonight it was good to see (them) break out of it,” Turner said. “We just have to keep working and getting better.”

Game Leaders

Dunn and Russo both finished with three points, each scoring one goal and getting credit for two assists. Senior goaltender Blake Wojtala stopped 25 of the 26 shots taken by Wyandotte.

A Look Back and a Look Ahead

Last Saturday the Trojans took on MIHL foe Port Huron North at home and were victorious by a score of 3-2 in overtime. On Dec. 7, Trenton also played at home and beat Woodhaven 3-0 in what was a non-conference matchup.

Trenton’s next game is 7:30 p.m. Saturday night at home against Birmingham Brother Rice.
