Trenton Legend Andy Greene Hosts Kids Hockey Camp

You can't be around Trenton too long and not notice that hockey is, well, kind of a big deal.

Former Trenton native and current star defensemen of the NHL's knows this as much as anyone, which is why he chose his hometown's as the host of his first annual hockey school that shares his name.

Approximately seventy-five youngsters from ages 6 to 12 came out for a four-day hockey camp. Greene brought with him a great coaching staff which included Todd Watson, head coach of the Saginaw Spirit of the Ontario Hockey League and his assistant coaches John Kisil and George Daniel. Enrico Blasi, head coach of Miami (of Ohio) University, Chris Bergeron, head coach of Bowling Green State University, and Jeff Blashill, head coach of Western Michigan University also got on the ice with the kids.

"The thing that makes this camp unique is the instruction," said Greene, speaking to his prestigious staff. "Not just me but the different instructors we have here. They care. They want to get the kids better and it's been going as well as possible."

The camp ran from Monday through Thursday, 9 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., and was broken down into three divisions, ages six and seven, ages eight and nine, and ages ten to 12. Each session would start off on the ice doing anything from skating drills to scrimmages. To the kid's delight, each session concluded with swim time outside at the Aquatic Center pool.

You can tell just watching the camp that it means a lot to Greene who admitted he didn't want to do a camp until he knew it would be done right. At most sport camps that bare the name of a popular athlete, the player may show up a day or two or a few minutes each day. Not Greene. Every session, all week, he was out there having fun with 75 of his biggest fans.

"Trenton has always been so good to me. It's a great place," Greene said. "The kids have been great. They've given us everything they had and more."
