Trenton Mounts Epic Comeback Versus Wyandotte
Rivalry takes to new level as Trojans defeat Bears due to costly errors.
When the Wyandotte Bears and the Trenton Trojans met a little over a month ago, Wyandotte won 2-1, in a game that was fast paced and low scoring. Both teams entered the game Monday with only two losses, so the battle for league supremacy was on the line.
After letting up an early run, Wyandotte rallied to score three runs, only to see Trenton post a rally of their own, scoring three runs in the bottom of the seventh to win the game, 4-3, and see a lead they thought they were going to get in their quest of the downriver league title evaporate into thin air.
Cold weather was a major force for both teams. With temperatures hovering between 45 and 50 degrees, both teams were trying to find ways to swing the bat and make hard contact.

Trenton led the scoring off with a sacrifice fly in the first inning, but from then until the top of the fifth inning, there was no offense from either team.
Wyandotte threatened the Trojans by loading the bases in the top of the fourth, but stranded all three runners after a groundout.

Wyandotte again loaded the bases and was able to convert, by putting three runs up on the scoreboard and leading 3-1, with two and a half innings left.
Trenton spent the bottom half of the fifth inning trying to rally with Caitlin Mercure and Julia Suyak getting hits. Suyak’s hit was key, as it was a bunt. Simply an effort to move the runner up. Instead of doing just that, she was able to run it out as well. Wyandotte was able to weather the storm and finish the inning without letting in a run.
For the next inning and a half, both teams were able to produce runners on the base paths, but no one was able to put the runners across the plate.
Senior Madison Brewer made arguably the play of the game, robbing Trenton of a hit while catching a line drive. Brewer then had enough sense to throw out the runner at first, completing a double play. It was a play that at the time seemed to preserve a Wyandotte victory.
The Bears entered the final inning knowing that if they were able to keep their two run lead, they would hold at least a share of the league lead with the Allen Park Jaguars. Trenton led the inning off with a double, that was followed by a single by Mercure.
With runners at first and second, Wyandotte was going to see how deep their resolve was. Two pitches later, the Trojan runners were moving to second and third on a wild pitch by Brewer. Another wild pitch scored the runners and Wyandotte opted for a strategic move to slow the game down. Trenton’s Suyak stepped up to the plate and rather than let her hit, they gave her an intentional walk to load the bases.
Trenton’s Brittany Webb stepped up to the plate, looking to play hero. Instead, another wild pitch brought Trenton into home, and the game was tied 3-3. Webb would later draw a walk. Wyandotte’s Brewer played the part of being rattled, and one more final wild pitch later, and the Trojans had completed the comeback, scoring all three runs unearned to earn the victory.
“Today, we did alright until the end,” Wyandotte Head Coach Jackie Jagiello. “We played real well, and the girls hit well.”
Trenton assistant head coach Alec Lesko felt that his team played great, but the win was ugly. “Tonight was an ugly win, we gave up the win in an ugly way early, and found a way to win the game in an ugly fashion,” Lesko said. “I’m real happy with the players right now and how they have each other’s backs.”
Trenton head coach John Biedenbach agreed with his head coach. “Sometimes after a win like this you come out smelling like roses. In the past, we’ve had opponents get the ugly win against us, and today was our time to do that.”
Trenton senior pitcher Ellie Fodor echoed the statements that both of her coaches stated, in terms of the teams having one another's backs.
"Today was a bit of a struggle but the team came back and it was because we had one another's backs.
Biedenbach also had great praise for sophomore Devon Trombley who continues to find ways into his starting lineup.
"Playing at this level has given me a new found confidence, not just for playing softball, but also in myself," Trobmley said.
Trenton will play doubleheaders against Woodhaven and Belleville on May 18 and May 20, respectively.
