Trojanettes Lose A Tough One To Lady Bucs

The Trenton girls softball team couldn't defend their district title Saturday at Carlson, falling to Riverview in the district championship 3-1.

Vengeance is sweet for Riverview as they knock off the Trojanettes 3-1 Saturday afternoon at Carlson High School.

The game got off to a fast start with all four runs being scored in the first inning, before both teams combined for just four hits the rest of the game and no runs. This was a drastic contrast to each teams' first contest where Trenton won 14-0 against Carlson and Riverview won 18-1 against Grosse Ile.

"I think the heat (90+ degree tempteratures) may have had something to do with it, I don't know," mused Trenton coach John Biedenbach. "Riverview was oportunistic though, to their credit.

Riverview got a double in the first followed by a walk and a single before a Trenton error opened the doors for three runs. Trenton got their run off an RBI by senior Kalli Bates. After that, two of Downriver's finest pitchers took over.

The Pirate's Samantha Chevillet got the win giving up just three hits and senior Ellie Fodor finished a tremendous career at Trenton with a six-hit loss.

"Both teams played well," Biedenbach said. "It's frustrating and disappointing to not be able to put anything together like that. But that kind of thing happens sometimes."

Biedenbach was impressed with both teams and reflected on how evenly matched they were. He looked back in the stat book and found that in the three games between the two schools this season, the score was a combined 8-8.

Trenton finishes the season winning a remarkable 28 games and the Downriver League regular season title. Stepping off the field for the final time was six Trojanettes--Carlie Heineman, Kalli Bates, Ellie Fodor, Brittany Webb, Caitlin Mercure, and Megan Higdon--all starters, who leave behind, what Biedenbach termed "quite a legacy."

"I'm proud but feel bad for them (the seniors) because they worked hard everyday. They will be sorely missed," Biedenbach said. "We will be very young next year and we're going to have a lot of girls learning on the fly ... they've got six big pairs of shoes to fill."
