1932-33 Genocide in Ukraine

Some surprising history for those who might think Russia's current aggression in Ukraine is something new.

A book review describing Stalin's mass starvation of Ukrainians in 1932-33: "Using new research, Applebaum provides conclusive and grim numbers: 4.5 million Ukrainians died, most in 1933 alone. Life expectancy was in free fall: for urban men, from 40 years of age before 1932 to 30 years after."

And the politics of why this was kept quiet for so long: the Soviet Union was our ally against Hitler.

The same article by Mindy Belz describes several other books worth reading: "A Pope and a President" by Paul Kengor, one on religion in China after Chairman Mao by Pulitzer Prize winner Ian Johnson, and one by Condoleeza Rice.
