2 Troy Residents Among Beaumont's 8 'Outstanding Doctors'
Troy residents Dr. Mary Smyth and Dr. Ernestina Delos Santos-Mac are honored as two of Beaumont's top eight outstanding doctors.

Beaumont Health System Executive Vice President and Chief Medical Officer Dr. Ananias Diokno has announced the winners of the 2012 Outstanding Doctors’ Awards.
“Four years ago, I began a tradition at Beaumont where we recognize outstanding members of our medical staff,” Diokno said. “The awards not only recognize a handful of winners, but also spotlight the dedication, care and expertise of all Beaumont doctors.”

Mary Smyth, M.D., Pediatrics, Beaumont, Royal Oak
Outstanding Physician and Humanitarian Award
Dr. Smyth has devoted her career and outside efforts as an advocate for children. She serves as the medical director of the child advocacy and protection team at Beaumont Children’s Hospital and also runs a child protection clinic.

In 2009, Dr. Smyth assisted in starting Legal Aid for Children and Families, linking families to free legal assistance to help address socioeconomic factors that create barriers to good health. She is the section head of ambulatory pediatrics at Beaumont Children’s Hospital. She holds faculty appointments to both Wayne State University and the Oakland University William Beaumont School of Medicine and is a past recipient of Beaumont Pediatric Department’s Outstanding Faculty Teaching Award. She lives in Troy.
Ernestina Delos Santos-Mac, M.D., Pediatric Consultants of Troy
Outstanding Physician and Humanitarian Award
Dr. Mac’s volunteer efforts have centered on the Filipino community both locally and in her native Philippines. She returns to the Philippines at least once a year for medical missionary work and has also adopted an orphanage.
She has a private practice in Troy and is an attending physician at both Beaumont, Royal Oak and Troy. Dr. Mac is a past president of the Philippine Medical Association and the Philippine American Community Center of Michigan where she has been a benefactor. Her work with PACCM earned her a Volunteer of the Year award in 2001 from the city of Troy, where she resides. She currently serves as a commissioner for the Michigan Asian Pacific American Affairs Commission.
Michael Pieh, M.D., M.P.H./T.M., Internal Medicine, Beaumont, Grosse Pointe
Outstanding Physician and Humanitarian Award
Dr. Pieh serves as president of the Taia River Union, which provides food, medications and other necessities to the needy of his home country, Sierra Leone. Since 2006, his group has treated more than 2,000 people on their trips to Sierra Leone. He also helps operate a year-round clinic in Freetown to help provide continuing care to those in need.
Since 2010, Dr. Pieh has been the program director of house physicians at Beaumont, Grosse Pointe. He focused on public health and preventive care at Tulane University so he could return to developing countries and educate patients about diabetes and hypertension before they became life-threatening issues. He is a resident of Ann Arbor.
Duane Mezwa, M.D., Diagnostic Radiology, Beaumont Health System
Outstanding Medical Staff Leadership Award
Since 1979, Dr. Duane Mezwa has been an active part of shaping the Radiology department at Beaumont Health System. During his career he has instituted many improvements, most notably the decision to incorporate nuclear medicine into the department of Radiology.
He is currently the health system chair for Diagnostic Radiology and Molecular Imaging, overseeing the activities of radiology and nuclear medicine at all three Beaumont campuses. Dr. Mezwa is a professor and chair of the department of Radiology at the Oakland University William Beaumont School of Medicine while also serving as the vice chair of admissions. He is a past president of both the Michigan Radiological Society and the national Association of Program Directors in Radiology. He lives in Rochester Hills.
Michael Chancellor, M.D., Urology, Beaumont, Royal Oak
Outstanding Medical Research Award
Dr. Chancellor came to Beaumont in 2008 already as a world-renowned researcher. He developed the use of muscle stem cells for treating incontinence and Beaumont is believed to be the first site in the United States to do so. He has been a National Institutes of Health-funded researcher for 20 years.
Dr. Chancellor has been invited to present more than 400 papers at national and international meetings and written more than 500 peer-reviewed journal articles and 11 books. His research has garnered 25 NIH grants, ranging from basic research to stem cell and gene therapy. He currently serves on the editorial boards of 13 scientific journals. Dr. Chancellor also serves as a professor in the department of Urology at Oakland University William Beaumont School of Medicine. He is a resident of Royal Oak.
Dr. Robert J. Granadier, M.D., Ophthalmology, Beaumont, Royal Oak
Outstanding Medical Education and Teaching Award
Throughout his career, Dr. Granadier has devoted his time as a teacher and leader in the ophthalmology field. He serves as a professor of Ophthalmology at the Oakland University William Beaumont School of Medicine. Dr. Granadier is a past president of the Michigan Society of Eye Physicians and Surgeons and was elected as a councilor from the state of Michigan to the American Academy of Ophthalmology, where he represents the interests of Michigan’s ophthalmologists on a national level.
Dr. Granadier currently serves as clinic director of the Beaumont Eye Institute, and as the residency program director for the department of Ophthalmology. He has been a recipient of the Margherio Teacher of the Year Award on two occasions. He lives in Bloomfield Hills.
Simon Dixon, B.H.B., M.B.Ch.B., Cardiovascular Medicine, Beaumont Health System
Outstanding Academic Excellence Award
Since 1999, Dr. Dixon has participated in some of the most advanced heart research projects in the nation. He is a leader in pioneering treatments to limit heart damage in patients having a heart attack. He works extensively on the treatment of diseased coronary artery bypass grafts, lectures widely on use of therapeutic hypothermia for cardiac arrest, and has conducted many clinical trials of new stents and techniques to treat coronary artery disease.
He serves as corporate chair of Cardiovascular Medicine for Beaumont Health System and co-director of Cardiovascular Research. Dr. Dixon also serves as a professor at the Oakland University William Beaumont School of Medicine and sits on several hospital committees. He is a resident of Birmingham.
Virinder K. Moudgil, Ph.D.
Outstanding Contribution to the Oakland University William Beaumont School of Medicine
A passionate researcher, Dr. Moudgil first partnered with Beaumont because of his work in breast cancer research. He began his tenure at Oakland University in 1976 and became senior vice president for academic affairs and provost 25 years later. Dr. Moudgil was co-chair of the Oakland University William Beaumont School of Medicine steering committee where he participated in the processes of selecting the dean and gaining all necessary accreditations. The School of Medicine opened in 2011, making it the first new allopathic medical school in Michigan in 47 years.
He has been an active member of the medical school’s Affiliation Advisory Committee, which provides guidance on the direction of the school. As of July 1, Dr. Moudgil became the president of Lawrence Technological University. He lives in Rochester Hills.
