3 Troy Athens Students, 1 Rochester Student Win Top Art Prizes

Oakland County high school students were asked to submit creative art related to the importance of financial empowerment.

TROY, MI — Three Troy Athens High School students took first place prizes in the Oakland County Finance Literacy Arts contest.

Atharva Dharphale, a senior at Troy Athens, took home the top prize in the 12th grade division with his "Teach a Child to Fish" drawing.

Athens junior Zachary Balcoff won the 11th grade top prize with his "Beyond the Bank" drawing and sophomore Alicia Wang earned the 10th grade's top prize with her "Reality of Debt."

Rochester High School freshman Sean Dimitry was the only student outside of Troy Athens to earn first place, as his drawing "Carefree in Lavish Paradise" won the 9th grade's top prize.

The contest winners received cash prizes from a $10,000 sponsorship by Flagstar Bank.

Oakland County high school students were invited to submit 2-D and multimedia/video pieces of art related to the importance of financial empowerment.

Overall, 91 students submitted art, including an array of mediums including 2-D (drawing, painting, photography, mixed media and illustration) and video. Entries were judged on creativity, artistic execution and the incorporation of the financial empowerment theme.
