📰 News we're reading

1. Troy celebrates start of new inclusive play area (candgnews.com) — Families in Troy can now enjoy a new inclusive playground at Boulan Park, with fenced-in equipment designed for kids of all abilities and funded largely through federal and county grants. This is just phase one of a three-part upgrade that will add new paths, picnic areas, more play structures, and restrooms over the next year or so, expanding accessible recreation close to home.

2. Metro Detroit police accused of using Flock cameras to help ICE make arrests (fox2detroit.com) — Troy police are among several Metro Detroit departments examined for how they use Flock license plate reader data, including in a DEA investigation where ICE became involved. The report raises questions from immigrant-rights advocates about local cooperation with federal immigration enforcement, while law-enforcement voices defend the cameras as lawful tools with department-specific access rules.

3. VA awards $352K to Michigan adaptive sports programs (abc12.com) — A Troy-based nonprofit, Disability Network Eastern Michigan, will share $352,800 in federal VA funding to expand adaptive sports for veterans and service members with disabilities, alongside the University of Michigan. This grant means more local opportunities for activities like cycling, wheelchair sports and outdoor recreation, aimed at boosting independence, confidence and community connection for veterans across the region.

4. Commission reviews plan for hospital tower, parking structure (candgnews.com) — Troy residents can expect a major expansion at Corewell Health Beaumont Hospital, with an eight-story tower, new ER waiting area, and five-story parking garage planned to ease chronic crowding. The $440 million local project, part of a larger systemwide investment, aims to add private rooms, improve emergency department flow, and make navigating the busy Dequindre Road campus easier by 2031.

5. Five out of 12 reported Q3 closings due to retirements (furnituretoday.com) — A longtime regional furniture retailer is shutting down its Troy showroom as part of a broader consolidation, shifting operations to Novi and Farmington Hills instead. For Troy shoppers, that means liquidation sales now and future trips out of town for Gorman's products, reflecting wider pressures and retirements reshaping furniture stores nationwide this year.
