Troy Police Charge Mom for Leaving Baby in Car

Mother loses custody of 9-month-old; left child in car for job interview.

TROY, MI — Troy police officers responded to a report on Oct. 7 that a baby was left alone in a car in the Kroger's Parking lot, 31 E. Long Lake Road. A witness in the parking lot had heard the baby crying, and said she had been standing next to the car, where the child was crying, for 10 minutes before officers arrived.

The outside temperature was 75 degrees, and the child, nine months old, was drenched in sweat, the police report states.

The 26-year-old mother of the child told officers she needed to leave the child in the car so she participate in a job interview at Primary Eye Care. The report states the woman said she was in desperate need of a job and did not have child care. She was issued a Misdemeanor Citation for Child Neglect. Child Protective Services was contacted and advised they would investigate the incident.
