Beaumont Names New Health System Chairman for Pediatrics

Dr. Ananias Diokno, executive vice president and chief medical officer for Beaumont Health System, has announced the appointment of Dr. Brian Berman as chairman, department of Pediatrics, and pediatrician-in-chief, Beaumont Children’s Hospital, effective Aug. 31.

Berman comes to Beaumont from University Hospitals Rainbow Babies & Children’s Hospital in Cleveland. Since 1993, he has been chief of the division of General Academic Pediatrics and director of the Pediatric Consultation and Referral Service.

“We are very pleased to have recruited a medical executive of Dr. Berman’s caliber,” Diokno said. “He will continue our legacy of strong pediatric leadership and continue to elevate our pediatric program.”

A committed and active educator, Berman serves as professor of Pediatrics at Case Western Reserve University School of Medicine. He has organized and participated in more than 200 conferences, lectures, presentations and other medical educational activities. He has been honored nine times with the Faculty Teaching Excellence Award at UH Rainbow Babies & Children’s Hospital and is a six-time winner of the “Pearl’s Day” award for resident teaching excellence, presented by pediatric residents.

Since 1989, Berman has been director of the Rainbow Sickle Cell Anemia Center at Rainbow Babies & Children’s Hospital. Through the years, he has served in many other medical leadership roles, including vice chairman for Community Physician Affairs; acting chief, division of Pediatric Hematology/Oncology; interim chief, division of Pediatric Gastroenterology; vice chairman for Faculty Affairs; and interim co-chairman, department of Pediatrics.

With a strong background in research, Berman has taken part in many clinical trials funded by the National Institutes of Health, including several focusing on sickle cell anemia, for which he served as a local principal investigator. He has presented his research at numerous national conferences and symposia. He authored or co-authored 50 articles published in peer-reviewed journals, including the New England Journal of Medicine, Journal of Pediatrics, and Blood. He currently serves on the editorial board of the journal, Clinical Pediatrics.

Berman received his medical degree from the Temple University School of Medicine in Philadelphia. He completed his residency in pediatrics at St. Christopher’s Hospital for Children at Temple University School of Medicine, and a two-year fellowship in pediatric hematology/oncology at the Yale University School of Medicine.

Berman succeeds Dr. Jeffrey Maisels, who is stepping down from his administrative role after achieving national recognition for Beaumont as a center of pediatric excellence, including membership in the National Association of Children’s Hospitals and Related Institutions. Maisels will remain with Beaumont to assist the Department of Pediatrics and Beaumont Children’s Hospital.
