BNP Media’s Engineering News-Record (ENR) Publishes 2016 ACE Mentor Program Yearbook and Honors Outstanding Mentors

Helping high school students pursue a career in architecture, construction and engineering.

TROY, Mich., - In its support of the ACE Mentor Program, BNP Media’s Engineering News-Record recently issued its annual ACE Mentor Program Yearbook advertising supplement for 2016 and also honored 2016’s ACE Outstanding Mentors in its editorial pages. Accompanying ENR’s August 22/29, 2016 Issue, the theme of the 40-page yearbook is “Growth and Expansion.”

The ACE Mentor Program of America, Inc. (ACE) is a non-profit, industry-led effort that helps mentor high school students and encourages them to pursue professional careers in architecture, construction and engineering. ACE grew out of a program for inner-city high school students, begun in New York City in 1993 by legendary structural engineer Charles H. Thornton, founding principal of The Thornton Tomasetti Group

Today, ACE is the construction industry's fastest-growing high school mentoring program, reaching over 8,000 students annually through 65 affiliates in over 30 states, the District of Columbia and Puerto Rico. Roughly 2,900 professional volunteers work with these students. As reported in this year’s yearbook by ACE Mentor Chair Thomas F. Gilbane, Jr., ACE gave out more than $1.5 million in scholarships this past year, two-thirds of ACE graduates enter college declaring a major in an ACE profession, and 70 percent of program participants are minorities.

Among the program’s accomplishments, ACE high school seniors graduate from high school and enter college directly from high school at much higher rates than the national average. To learn more about the ACE Mentor Program, visit www.acementor.org.

Twelfth year of publication by ENR. This year (2016) represents the 12th year that ENR has produced the ACE Mentor Program Yearbook. The ACE Yearbooks are published as one of ENR’s many special advertising sections during the year, which are written and produced independently of ENR’s editorial content.

“ENR has supported ACE from its earliest days and gave it a big boost when the editors chose Thornton as its Award of Excellence winner in 2001 for expanding ACE from a regional to a national program,” said ENR Editor-in-Chief Janice L. Tuchman, a long-time staff member who became editor-in-chief also in 2001. “ACE is one of the most effective programs to come along in making young people aware of the wide range of career possibilities in construction and giving them the experience and confidence to continue their studies in the field.”

Growing the BNP Media connection. BNP Media and ENR will continue to support the ACE Mentor Program, said Scott Seltz, ENR’s Publisher, who is also on the ACE Mentor Program Board of Directors.

“Since BNP Media’s acquisition of ENR last year, we have increased our involvement with the ACE Mentor Program and the national chapter’s efforts to support regional chapters and to create interest in the creation of new regional chapters,” said Seltz. “These efforts reflect the support given by BNP Media to the industries it serves with its publications, web sites, sponsored trade shows and educational programs, and research.”

“This year, ACE put an emphasis on showcasing regional chapters and the yearbook featured the work and achievements of more than 40 affiliates. Six exceptional mentors were selected as 2016 ENR-ACE Outstanding Mentors and each of their affiliates received a $2,500 student scholarship in their name. Engineering News-Record and its parent company BNP Media generously support this program,” added Seltz.
