Cadillac Escalade Stolen, Retail Fraud, and Robbery in Troy

The following information was obtained from the Troy Police Department. Where arrests or charges are mentioned, it does not indicate a conviction.

The following information about police incidents is taken directly from the most recent Troy Police Department media release.

Auto theft 

500 block of Burtman, between 6 and 11:52 p.m. on May 11: The complainant reports his Cadillac Escalade was stolen while parked on the street. An Apple iPad, assorted power tools and some clothing were in the vehicle when it was stolen. A Troy Officer was writing the police report documenting the incident when he learned the vehicle had already been recovered, abandoned, in Detroit. The ignition had been punched.

Robbery

Nordstrom (2850 W. Big Beaver Rd.), at 10:15 p.m. on May 11: Troy Officers were dispatched to a purse snatching that had just occurred outside of Nordstrom. The victim and her adult daughter were walking to their vehicle when a reddish colored SUV pulled up next to them. A man jumped out of the front passenger seat of the vehicle and grabbed the victim’s purse and shopping bag. He got back into the vehicle and the vehicle fled north through the parking lot.

The shopping bag was caught in the perpetrator’s passenger door and the contents were strewn across the ground. The passenger, who took the purse and bag, is described as a male in his twenties, 5’8” tall with a heavy build and short brown hair. The stolen purse contained a wallet, cash, a passport, an international driver’s license, two credit cards and two cell phones. The victim, a South Korean citizen, is in the country visiting her daughter who is attending college in the US. The contents of the shopping bag were recovered by officers. 

Retail fraud

  • Kohl’s (500 John R Rd.), at 3:30 p.m. on May 13: A 16-year-old female from Madison Heights was detained for third-degree retail fraud after shoplifting a skirt, two shirts and a blazer. The teen concealed the merchandise in her purse. She was turned over to a grandparent and will be petitioned to Oakland County Probate Court. 
  • Saks Fifth Avenue (2901 W Big Beaver Rd.), at 7:02 p.m. on May 13: Loss Prevention reports observing a man shoplift two Gucci belts. When he left the store with the stolen merchandise and was stopped by Loss Prevention the suspect attempted to flee however Loss Prevention succeeded in detaining him. A Loss Prevention officer sustained a minor injury during the struggle. The suspect initially provided Troy Officers with a fake name; however, after investigation officers discovered the suspect’s true name. When the suspect was searched marijuana was found in his pants pocket. The 27-year-old Detroit resident was arrested for second-degree retail fraud, assault and battery, and obstructing a police officer. He has a lengthy criminal history and sixteen outstanding warrants for his arrest. The total value of the stolen merchandise was $785. 
  • Kohl’s (500 John R Rd.), at 4:28 p.m. on May 14: Troy Officers arrested a 49-year-old Detroit man for second-degree retail fraud after he shoplifted a ten piece Calphalon pot and pan set and an Omega juicer. The man selected the items and placed them in a Kohl’s shopping cart. He then pushed the cart out of the store passing several open cash registers but making but making no attempt to pay for the merchandise. The total value of the two items stolen was $649.98.
  • Macy’s (2750 W. Big Beaver Rd.), at 7:10 p.m. on May 14: A 21-year-old Hamtramck man was arrested for second-degree retail fraud after shoplifting eight articles of clothing. The 21-year-old went into a fitting room and put all eight pieces of clothing on under his own clothes and then left the store without paying for the merchandise. The total value of the stolen clothing was $306.90.
  • Nordstrom (2850 W. Big Beaver Rd.), at 1:52 p.m. on May 10: Officers arrested a 63-year-old Troy woman for second-degree retail fraud after she shoplifted two shirts. She has two previous convictions for retail fraud. 
  • Sears (300 W. 14 Mile Rd.), at 5:45 p.m. on May 10: Two Marlette women, ages 20 and 22, were issued citations for retail fraud after shoplifting seven articles of clothing with a retail value of $282.99.
  • Macy’s (500 W. 14 Mile Rd.), at 3:56 p.m. on May 11: A 27-year-old male from Detroit was arrested for third-degree retail fraud after shoplifting a $98 polo shirt. The man concealed the shirt in the front of his pants and left the store without purchasing the merchandise. 
  • JCPenney (700 W. 14 Mile Rd.), at 7:51 p.m. on May 11: Troy Officers arrested a 22-year-old Warren woman for third-degree retail fraud after she shoplifted a bottle of perfume, a shirt, a pair of pants and some make-up. The woman had concealed the stolen merchandise in her purse. 
  • JCPenney, 700 W. 14 Mile Rd.), at 11:29 p.m. on May 12: A 17-year-old male was issued a citation for third-degree retail fraud after shoplifting a $45 pair of shoes. The Troy resident concealed the shoes in his pants and exited the store without making any attempt to pay for them.
