DCDS Celebrates Holidays Around the World with Multicultural Display
Inclusive holiday decorations teach Detroit Country Day School students about diverse religions and celebrations.
Detroit Country Day School (DCDS) sees the holiday season as the perfect opportunity to bring awareness to the diversity of their student body. Students, staff, and parents at the independent, non-denominational, college preparatory school are honoring a diverse swath of religious and secular celebrations through multicultural holiday displays at each campus.
Information about the history and significance of each holiday accompanies the colorful decorations. This year’s display at the Thirteen Mile Campus includes the Chinese New Year, Christmas, Diwali, Hanukkah, Kwanzaa, and Ramadan. While the exhibits are beautiful and festive, they also teach an important global awareness and appreciation to the students and school community, according to DCDS Headmaster Glen Shilling.
“Detroit Country Day School has a rich history of celebrating cultural diversity,” said Shilling. “By learning about traditions that may be different than their own, our students become more thoughtful, compassionate, and open-minded. This philosophy has been a cornerstone of our educational experience for many years. As we celebrate our centennial, the school is committed to continuing this tradition to help our students become global leaders skilled in navigating a world that is both connected and collaborative.”
