Drum & Bugle Corps Blast into Troy August 1

Troy students and residents with ID get a $5 discount on tickets at the gate on the day of the show.

With drums pounding, trumpets blazing and flags fluttering, more than 30 young musicians from southeast Michigan schools are among 1,400 performers competing in a drum and bugle corps competition at 7 p.m. on Saturday, August 1 at Troy Athens High School.


The Legends Drum Corps Invitational will feature eight corps fromthe U.S., The Netherlands and Canada. Troy Athens Band Boosters host the event with Kalamazoo-based Legends Drum and Bugle Corps.

Drum corps members, including the local students who perform with Legends, range in age from 14 to 22. They train and prepare at weekend camps throughout the school year, and spend their entire summer rehearsing, traveling and performing throughout the country.

“We are thrilled to partner with Legends to bring drum corps to Troy for a second year,” said

P. Jefferson McCoy, director of bands at Troy Athens High School. “And, this is a great opportunity for the local kids to perform in front of a hometown crowd.”

Drum corps performances are highly refined musical marching productions made up of brass, percussion and color guard with choreography and dance on the field, explained McCoy.

“Each corps’performance is a unique 10-minute story that draws you in through movement, music and artistry,” explained Ibe Sodawalla, executive director/CEO of Legends. “It isa very entertaining family-oriented event.”

The groups performing in Troy will include Legends; Blue Devils B, Concord, CA; Genesis, Austin, TX; Spartans, Nashua, NH; Music City, Nashville, TN; Racine Scouts, Racine, WI; Blue Saints, Sudbury, ON; and Jubal, Dordrecht, The Netherlands. In addition, the Preston Scout House Band and the Diplomats, both from Canada, will perform in exhibition.

Tickets purchased at the gate are $15 for general admission and $20 for premium seating; or, order discounted tickets online in advance.On the day of the show, students and Troy residentssave $5 with valid IDs.
