Drunken Driving, Driving Under the Influence Incidents: Jan. 26-28, 3013

The following information about recent incidents of drunken driving and driving under the influence is taken directly from the most recent Troy Police Department media release. This information may be edited for clarity or style. Note: In Michigan, the Blood Alcohol Content legal limit is .08 percent.

I-75 and Adams, 12:59 a.m. on Jan. 26, 2013

Troy police officers were dispatched to the area on a report of a car in the ditch off I-75. Officers located the vehicle, which had extensive damage. Both airbags had deployed and the rear window was broken out. The vehicle was unoccupied but officers followed a single pair of footprints in the snow and located the driver, a 29-year-old man from Riverview. The man stated he had lost control of his SUV and gone into the ditch. Officers noted that he smelled strongly of intoxicants and had bloodshot and glassy eyes. After failing sobriety tests, the driver was arrested for operating while intoxicated. Breath test results were 0.18 percent.

Big Beaver and Sparta, 2:47 p.m. on Jan. 26, 3013

A citizen called Troy dispatch to report that he was following a suspected drunken driver that was swerving over the roadway and repeatedly striking curbs. A police officer then located the vehicle and observed it traveling with a flat front passenger side tire. The vehicle was having difficulty maintaining its lane and struck a curb. When the vehicle was stopped, the officer noted the driver was confused. Sobriety tests were administered and the driver, a 65-year-old Warren woman, displayed very poor balance, according to police. She admitted to taking a prescription pain killer and prescription anti-anxiety medication. She was arrested for operating under the influence of drugs and a blood test was administered.

14 Mile & John R, 10:38 p.m. on Jan. 26, 2013

A vehicle was stopped by Troy police after officers reported it made a prohibited turn and cut off another vehicle in the process. When the vehicle was in the midst of pulling over, the passenger threw what was later determined to be a marijuana cigarette out of the minivan window, according to the report. There was a strong odor of marijuana coming from the vehicle, police said. It was noticed by police that the driver had slurred speech and very bloodshot and glassy eyes. The 31-year-old male from Detroit said he was in a rush because his daughter was being taken to the hospital. A short time later, the driver stated that it was his son that was going to the hospital. After failing sobriety tests, he was arrested for operating under the influence of drugs and driving while license suspended. Results are pending from an administered blood test.

Big Beaver & I-75, 1:19 a.m. on Jan. 27, 2013

A Troy police sergeant stopped a vehicle that he observed repeatedly weaving over the roadway. The driver, a 25-year-old female from Rochester Hills, smelled of intoxicants and failed sobriety tests. She was arrested for operating while intoxicated. Breath test results were 0.14 percent. 

Maple & Dequindre, 2:41 a.m. on Jan. 27, 2013

After Troy officers stopped a vehicle for speeding, they discovered that the driver had bloodshot and glassy eyes along with slurred speech and smelled of intoxicants. After demonstrating poor balance and failing sobriety tests, the 25-year-old female from Hamtramck was arrested for operating while intoxicated. Breath test results were .09 percent. 

Maple & Dequindre, 3:17 a.m. on Jan. 27, 2013

Troy police were dispatched to the area when a report was received that a man was slumped over the wheel of a vehicle stopped in the roadway. The caller stated that she had been behind the stopped vehicle for at least three light cycles. Officers located the vehicle and found the driver asleep and slumped over with the vehicle in drive and his foot on the brake. The driver was breathing but officers had to bang on the car windows to wake him up. Officers noted that the 28-year-old Madison Heights male smelled of intoxicants and appeared confused and disoriented. After failing sobriety tests, he was arrested for operating while intoxicated second offense and driving while license suspended. Results are pending from an administered blood test.

I-75 & 14 Mile, 3:50 a.m. On, Jan. 28, 2013

Troy police responded to a report of a car in the ditch off I-75. Officers located the vehicle and spoke with the driver who stated that she had spun out and went into the ditch. She was not injured in the crash. The 19-year-old Troy resident had bloodshot and glasses eyes, smelled of intoxicants and was slurring some of her words, according to the police report. She was unable to say the alphabet correctly. She was arrested for operating while intoxicated. Breath test results were 0.11 percent.
