FESTIVAL
OF FROGS AND SNAKES IS COMING
TO
THE STAGE NATURE CENTER
TROY, MI - The Troy Nature Society (TNS) will be
hosting a Festival of Frogs and Snakes on Saturday, May 17th at the Lloyd A. Stage Nature Center
from 12:00 pm to 4:00 pm. Children and adults
are invited to come and discover which of our slimy and scaly friends live in
Michigan and what makes these amphibians and reptiles (herps) so amazing.
Participants will enjoy amphibian and reptile-themed presentations throughout
the day, frog hikes, make & take crafts, face painting, and much more. Three
special guest presenters will entertain us with how the frogs and toads of
Michigan are doing, the latest news about our Michigan rattlesnake, and LIVE
amphibians and reptiles with a chance to hold a snake and see a snake eat! TNS is also holding an Amphibian and Reptile
Poster Competition to raise awareness of these special animals. The results of
this competition will be on display the day of the festival. There will also be vendors selling
nature-themed arts & crafts to purchase.
“We hope to raise awareness of these
fascinating creatures and their importance to people and the environment. We
are delighted to have funding from the DNR to help bring these amazing guest presenters
to the festival at Lloyd A. Stage Nature Center. This is the first “herp” festival
in the state and we hope to have it next year too. Herps can be good indicators
of the quality of our environment and play important roles in our ecosystems.”
commented Layne Brown, organizer of the event and one of the Naturalists of the
Society.
The
festival is a pay-one-price event. The public
is invited to come early and enjoy everything there is to offer!
