Fire Reported on Meijer Drive in Troy

UPDATE: A fire broke out at Sulzer Metco, a smelting operations company, just before 6 p.m. Monday. According to Assistant Fire Chief Chuck Riesterer of Troy Fire Station #3, workers were inside at the time going about their daily tasks of melting down metals for recycling, when a piece of liquid metal escaped its crucible and fell one story down causing the workers to evacuate the building. 

Once firefighters arrived and entered the building, they witnessed an eruption of a propane tank which blew out several panels on the upper level of the two-story building, according to Riesterer.

No one was hurt in the incident. The building department will inspect the property tomorrow and determine whether or not it is safe to occupy.

"These workers were already evacuated by the time we got there because they regularly practice regular evacuation drills," said Asst. Chief Riesterer. "They did not stay and try to fight the fire."

Over 40 firefighters from three Troy fire stations assisted in extinguishing the flames.

7:50 p.m.: A two-alarm fire is being reported in Troy on Meijer Drive.

According to WXYZ-TV, Channel 7, the fire is at 1972 Meijer Drive. That address belongs to Sulzer Metco, a large industrial facilitiy.

Patch reported a fire at that facility in 2011, which was the result of mechanical failure.

Calls have been made to the fire department.

According to readers on the Troy and Royal Oak Patch Facebook pages, there was a loud bang heard in the area around 6 p.m. They also wrote that they saw smoke from area of the facility.
