How Many Credit Cards Should You Own

Everyone owns different amounts of credit cards, but how many is the right amount?

When a person is eligible to apply for credit cards, they might ignore the damage they can do to their credit score if they max out five different credit cards, falling into debt. If this debt persists and grows for an individual or a family, it can highly damage any shot they have of acquiring a loan.

This begs the question, ‘How many credit cards do I really need?’ Depending on the situation, everyone is different. According to creditcards.com, each person in the United States owns between two and three credit cards, and although it may seem like a low number, two or three may be too many or not enough depending on who you are. The point of managing multiple credit cards is to raise your credit effectively as possible. Owning multiple credit cards without falling deep into debt shows loan distributors how responsible you are with your money, making it easier to obtain a loan.

A low credit score will keep you from gaining a loan and signing a cell phone contract, as well as increasing your insurance premiums and can even keep you from getting a job in the finance industry. You’ll absolutely lower your credit score if you open more credit cards than you can pay off on a monthly basis. People become overwhelmed when they open more credit cards than they can handle because debt increases and credit score gets damaged, which leads to an immense amount of financial problems. All in all, if you’re deep in credit card debt, it might be smarter to own one credit card or none at all. If you know how to spend within your means, it might be smart to apply for another one or two credit cards which would enhance your credit score.
