Kinders Investigate Pumpkins To Learn Measurement, Counting, And Other Math Skills

Martell Elementary teachers carve out a fun and seasonal math lesson using fruit.

Using fruit as a tool to teach math seems strange, yet that's exactly how teachers at Troy's Martell Elementary creatively executed their lessons Monday afternoon.

The school's three kindergarten classes - along with volunteers - gathered together to investigate pumpkins. They measured the height and weight of their gourds and used their counting skills to tally up the seeds inside.

Students, parents, and grandparents then let their creativity fly by desiging and carving the gutted pumpkins. Yesterday, they taste-tested baked pumpkin seeds and muffins, "all for the love of math and pumpkins," said teacher Laurie Pickell.
