Mensa Presents: Perils From Space

Mensa Presents: Perils From Space (Close Encounters of the Worst Kind)

The impact of a large meteor in Russia, on February 15, 2013, reminds us that the Universe is a very dangerous place. Large impacts are relatively infrequent but they do happen!  Join us on Saturday, June 21st, when Dr. Claude Pruneau, Wayne State’s Director of Planetarium and Outreach, will present a survey of large meteoritic impacts on Earth and discuss the origins of these large objects. He will also present a summary of efforts conducted nationally and internationally to detect potentially hazardous asteroids (PHAs), i.e. asteroids with orbits that bring them periodically near Earth. As well as a brief discussion of techniques envisioned to avert or mitigate the effects of potential impacts.

This is a great program for the entire family! Doors open at 7:30 pm for mingling. The program starts at 8:00 pm.

Mensa presents speakers on the third Saturday of most months. These programs are open to the public. Admission- adult members: $4, adult non-members: $5, Children 13 and under: $2. For more information see: MensaDetroit.com
