Michigan School Counselors Meet to Discuss Future of Work

The Michigan Association for College Admission Counseling (MACAC) is hosting the second annual Focus: Future of Work conference. This year’s conference will cover what the next generation wants from work, future talent demand, and how school counselors can help meet this demand. The free-to-attend event is exclusive to Michigan high school counselors and focuses on career readiness.

Michigan-based companies Kelly Services, Plastic Omnium and Cooper Standard will be present to preview in-demand job skills, salary projections and other trends.

“Jobs of the future will require agility, an ability to train, upskill, enter and re-enter the workforce multiple times during one’s adult life,” says Holly Markiecki Bennetts, past-president of MACAC. “This shifts education away from a clearly defined start and stop point in time to lifelong learning and retooling in response to new and emerging opportunities.”

“The workforce, the workplace, technology and social norms are leading to a whole new way of working,” says John Healy, vice president and managing director of Kelly Services, Office of the Future of Work. “The future of work in Michigan, and thus the future of education in Michigan, is being shaped by human agility.”

Healy will share the impact of trends such as automation and STEM readiness on careers in the state. The event will showcase new and emerging high-paying jobs in skilled manufacturing and STEM careers that may not require a degree.

The conference will be held Friday, November 15 from 8:30AM to 1:30PM at the Michigan Education Association (MEA) headquarters. Approximately 150 counselors will be in attendance.
