Oakland County To Hold Breastfeeding Education Workshop

The second annual event is meant to bolster breastfeeding education and resources.

From Oakland County, Mich., Health Division: Oakland County Health Division’s Women, Infants, and Children (WIC) Program in partnership with the Michigan Breastfeeding Network (MIBFN) and the Oakland County Breastfeeding Coalition, will host “Bridging the Breastfeeding Gap” Educational Workshop on Monday, Aug. 19.

The event will take place from 9 a.m.- 1:30 p.m. at the L. Brooks Patterson Executive Office Conference Center, 2100 Pontiac Lake Rd., Building 41 West, in Waterford. The free workshop will provide breastfeeding education and resources to employers, organizations, and families.

“By providing the community information and resources about breastfeeding, we can work to reduce the stigma and inequities surrounding breastfeeding and provide a comfortable experience for both mom and baby,” said Leigh-Anne Stafford, health officer for the health division.

The event will focus on reducing racial inequities surrounding breastfeeding, and how families, organizations, and employers can support breastfeeding mothers. Six breakout sessions will be available for attendees to choose from. Featured presentations include:

  • Addressing Systems Changes Surrounding Health Inequities & Breastfeeding by Jennifer Day, IBCLC
  • Transforming the System: Lactation Support Through Collaborative Power by Elon Geffrard, BS, CLC, ICCE

Registration and light breakfast will begin at 8:30 a.m. with lunch provided by the Michigan Breastfeeding Network. Continuing Education Recognition Points (CERPs) are available for Lactation Consultants upon request on the event evaluation within 2-3 weeks following the event.
