Observed in October, Oakland Community Health Network (OCHN) is joining efforts to recognize National Disability Employment Awareness Month
OAKLAND COUNTY, MI (October 25, 2022) – Observed each year in October for many decades, Oakland Community Health Network (OCHN) is joining efforts to recognize National Disability Employment Awareness Month (NDEAM).
The many and varied contributions of America's workers with disabilities can be observed all
yearlong but emphasizing the importance of inclusion and support this month is
commemorated. This year’s theme, “Disability: Part of the Equity Equation”, reflects the
important role people with disabilities play in a diverse and inclusive American workforce.
“OCHN values the abilities of all individuals, especially when supporting people with disabilities
find employment opportunities,” states Cheryl Myers, an OCHN employee who lives with
Cerebral Palsy and is deaf. “This is important for me because it creates a more inclusive work
environment and provides a more diverse perspective for continued achievements in the
future.”

Individuals with disabilities have a unique set of skills that adapt well to many work
environments and increase access to employment opportunities. This is an important part of
OCHN’s community inclusion efforts. Initiatives that promote supported employment, include
programs for individualized placement, skill building, and customized employment choices.
“Just because I am blind, does not mean I cannot see – and I don’t need my eyes to see that
I’m a valued member of the work force,” states Diane Sansalone, member of the OCHN
Citizen’s Advisory Council (CAC) who is living with a visual impairment.

About OCHN
OCHN is contracted by the Michigan Department of Health and Human Services to lead a provider
service network that assists approximately 23,000 Oakland County citizens at more than 300 service sites across the county. People who receive public behavioral health services through OCHN's provider network include those who have an intellectual or developmental disability, mental health challenge, or substance use disorder. Most of these individuals have Medicaid insurance coverage.
OCHN's goal is to ensure these individuals are aware of and have access to services and supports
that will improve their health and quality of life, as well as ensure their engagement in full community
participation. Its mission to “inspire hope, empower people, and strengthen communities” reflects an unyielding belief in a "Valuable System for Valued People." Programs and supports provided by OCHN's service network are available at www.oaklandchn.org.
