Police On High Alert After Baton Rouge Shootings
" . . . An attack on police officers anywhere is an attack on all of us," Detroit Police Chief James Craig says.

Detroit police are again on high alert after three police officers were shot dead and three others were injured in another round of violence targeting police, this time Sunday in Baton Rouge, LA, where tensions have been running high after the shooting of 37-year-old Alton Sterling, a black suspect, by a white police officer.
“Another dark day in policing,” Detroit Police Chief James Craig told The Detroit News. “First and foremost, an attack on police officers anywhere is an attack on all of us. We are certainly in a heightened state, and we put that information out to our officers. We’re asking all of our officers to be extra vigilant and to be aware of their surroundings.”
One of the slain officers in Baton Rouge, Officer Montrell Jackson, was the nephew Fred Jackson, a former longtime running backs coach at the University of Michigan and now the football coach at Ypsilanti Community High School, the Detroit Free Press reported.
On Twitter, the coach paid tribute to the fallen officer.

Montrell Jackson, was a great young man, my nephew. A great father and husband. He will be missed by so many.

One of the fallen Dallas officers had roots in southeast Michigan, too. Former Wayne County Sheriff's Deputy Michael Krol is from Redford Township.
As happened after the Dallas shootings, members of the public responded with an outpouring of support for their local police departments.
Several local police agencies sent honor guards to Dallas for memorial and funeral services.
The Troy Police Department posted condolences on Facebook for the fallen officers in Baton Rouge.
