Red Cross Visits Hamilton Elementary, Accepts Check for Hurricane Victims
Troy, Mich.— A representative of the Red Cross visited Hamilton Elementary School on November 1 to accept a check for victims of hurricane Harvey. The students raised money for the Red Cross through “Penny Wars,” where each grade was challenged to collect the most pennies in jars. “It was a student driven exercise; they heard about the hurricane in the media, and this was a tangible way to help,” said PTA Co-President Julie Gould.
Hamilton’s fifth graders raised the most money; third graders had the most per-pupil participation and presented Red Cross Regional Philanthropy Officer Sarah Paspal with a check for $3,517.70. They proudly posed with the check and the Hamilton Penny Wars trophy.

Paspal thanked the students, telling them their donation helped 465 people in Harvey’s wake secure short term living accommodations. She shared with them Red Cross’ mission, explaining that home fires are the most prevalent tragedy they face, and reminded them to check their home smoke alarms with their parents when Daylight Savings occurs on Sunday.
