Thieves Caught Trying To Take Copper From Old Kmart In Troy: Police

The former Kmart headquarters building along Big Beaver Road is slated for demolition.

TROY, MI — Police caught a couple of thieves trying to steal copper from the former Kmart headquarters building in Troy, police said.

Officers decided to inspect the building at 10:30 a.m. on Oct. 1 when they noticed a section of damaged fencing around the vacant building along Big Beaver Road, police said.

After inspecting the fence, officers found an unknown vehicle parked under the parking deck and decoded to inspect further after hearing power tools and banging coming from inside the building, police said.

That's when officers walked in on the couple trying to strip Cooper piping from the building police said.

As officers were arresting the couple, they found the woman was carrying crystal methamphetamine, two crack pipes and a small rock of crack cocaine in a black leather fanny pack, police said.

The man was charged with breaking and entering with burglar's tools while the woman was charged with breaking and entering with intent and possession of narcotics less than 25 grams.

The couple was paced in the Troy Police Lock-up facility.
