Troy Athens Charity Week Big Reveal!!

Today, Troy Athens High School concluded one of Michigan’s largest high school student-led charity campaigns, Charity Week 2018, February 12-16! Their goal was to raise over $100,000 for their chosen charity, and as the crowd of 1,550 students, teachers, administrators and friends looked on, the giant banner was peeled back, to reveal the 2018 number: $148,813.77!!!
These funds will be donated to Athens’ chosen charity for 2018: Detroit Street Care, whose mission is to provide quality medical care to the underserved homeless population of Detroit by bridging the gap between the homeless population and the medical community by building relationships with patients to gain their trust by offering respect and companionship.
“All the work we put into this project came together today,” said AHS Senior and Student Government president Lauren Hanoosh. “I am so proud of my fellow students, our amazing teachers and staff, and everyone who helped us reach this goal. I can’t believe it is my last year doing Charity Week. I hope to come back as an Athens alum.”
Charity Week has been a tradition at Athens High school, starting in the mid-80s. By 1998 (when the current advisors began keeping track), they had raised $8,400 for Gilda’s Club. In 2008, they raised $23,600 for ALS of Michigan. In 2015, they raised $57,752 for the Wish Upon a Teen program. The number has steadily increased over the years. It is a student-led project, from choosing the charity, to coming up with all of the fundraising activities, to executing the plan. What will they do for an encore? Stay tuned for Charity Week 2019 to find out!
