Troy Athens Hosts Marching Band Competition

The Troy Athens Red Hawk Marching Band is excited to host 16 bands from around Michigan at the 7th annual Troy Athens Invitational marching band competition on October 10 as part of The Michigan Competing Band Association (MCBA) circuit.

“Marching competitions are a lot of fun to watch, as each band’s performance tells a story through music, marching and the movement of the color guard,” said P. Jefferson McCoy, Athens director of bands.

Bands from across Michigan will be performing—including Columbia Central, Durand, Grand Blanc Marysville, SCS South Lake, and south Lyon. In addition to the Athens Marching Band other local bands featured are Clarkston, Farmington, Hazel Park, Lake Orion, Lamphere, Lakeland, L’Anse Creuse, L’Anse Creuse North, Livonia Franklin, Novi, and Plymouth Canton, and Walled Lake Central. Competing bands hope to achieve scores high enough to qualify for the State Finals at Ford Field in November.

The Troy Athens 2015 competitive show Blast Off! And Adventure in Space takes the audience on an awesome trip back in time and through space. Remember the special days of childhood when a simple cardboard box could become a spaceship ready to fly you to the moon as the band plays Gustav Holst’s “Jupiter” and Robert W. Smith’s “Twelve Seconds to the Moon.” Wonder at the beauty and majesty of the sights in space during Jerry Goldsmith’s “Star Trek: First Contact.” With a call from inside, head back home as the band once more shares Holst’s “Jupiter.”

The competition begins at 3:45 pm. Doors will open at 2:45 pm. Tickets will be on sale at the gate to the Athens stadium. Admission is $8.00 for adults and $6.00 for students and senior citizens. Athens High School is located at 4333 John R Road.
