Troy Citizens Police Academy Offers Real-Life Experiences

The program offers a snapshot of what it's like to be a police officer in Troy.

TROY, MI — The Troy Police Department is offering citizens a chance to see “who we are and what we do” in the upcoming eight-week Citizens Police Academy.

The program, which runs from 6:30-9:30 p.m. on consecutive Tuesdays, Sept. 13-Nov 1, offers a snapshot into how police officers perform their duties and serve the public. If offers both classroom instruction and practical experience.

The Citizens Police Academy is open to the public; however, preference will be given to Troy residents, business owners, and employees of businesses in the city. Class size is limited and applicants are chosen on a first-come, first-served basis.

Eligible applicants will be subject to a background investigation before consideration. Attendees are required to sign a waiver and must be able to stand for up to 60 minutes.

Presentations are scheduled at the Troy Police Department Emergency Operations Center,500 West Big Beaver Road, the Troy Fire & Police Training Center at 4850 John R, and Fire Station No. 3 at 2400 West Big Beaver Road. There is no cost to attend the program.

The curriculum for the Academy will include facility tours and presentations on the following:

  • Communications
  • Road patrol
  • Traffic safety
  • Tactical support
  • K-9 unit
  • Evidence technicians
  • Special task forces
  • Criminal investigation
  • Crisis negotiation
  • Taser demonstration
  • Training
  • Defensive tactics
  • Staff inspections
  • Firearms range
  • Lockup
  • Ride-along
  • Emergency response
  • Hazmat
  • Fire department
