Troy Hotels Help Police Curtail Underage Prom Drinking
Troy police remind parents, adults and hotel staff they could be criminally charged if they provide a place for underage drinking parties.
TROY, MI – High school prom and graduation revelers in Troy, be warned: Area hotel staff have been trained in techniques to prevent underage alcohol use at after-event parties.
The Hotel Alcohol Awareness Project between the Troy Police Department and area hotels is now in its 15th year.

The police department said in a news release that underage drinking is a serious public safety issue that demands a strict enforcement approach year-round, but especially during the busy prom and graduation season.
Police officers have been meeting with hotel managers in Troy to increase their awareness about underage drinking. Hotel personnel are given copies of city ordinances related to possession and consumption of alcohol by minors, including the provision that prescribes that “no person shall furnish or provide any location for another person with reason to know that the location may be used to commit an illegal act.”

Additionally, “hotel staff are encouraged to make wise decisions when renting rooms during this season, and to contact police should they believe illegal activity is occurring,” police said in the news release.
Troy police officers will also be conducting additional patrols at the hotels during graduation and prom season, and will be available to assist hotel employees with any issues they may encounter.
The Troy Athens High School prom is May 7. The Troy High School prom is May 21.
