Apple Island listed in National Register of Historic Places

Apple Island is now listed in the National Register of Historic Places

Apple Island Historic Archaeological Site, also known as Apple Island, in Orchard Lake, is now listed in the National Register of Historical Places (NRHP). The National Parks Services, a branch of the United States Department of the Interior, approved Apple Island as a historic place in August 2018 with archaeological significance.

“Over the years Greater West Bloomfield Historical Society (GWBHS) board members have been grateful for project support from so many researchers and volunteers to see this project through,” said Gina Gregory, the Greater West Bloomfield Historical Society President. “We are delighted the nomination was accepted!”

The NRHP is the nation’s official list of cultural resources worthy of preservation. The nomination was made by the State Historic Preservation Office of the Michigan State Housing Development Authority (SHPO). For more information about the SHPO, please visit: www.michigan.gov/shpo.

“Apple Island has so many interesting facets - geology, flora and fauna, use by Native Americans, vacationers, and now as a WBSD educational nature center. GWBHS is excited the island is now recognized nationally as having historical significance!” said Gregory.

The listing does not place any legal restrictions on Apple Island, but it does allow for consideration in the planning for federal or federally-assisted projects, provides eligibility for federal tax benefits, qualifies properties for federal assistance for historic preservation, when funds are available, serves as a catalyst for economic development, and promotes heritage tourism.

“GWBHS board members formed an "Apple Island NRHP" committee to explore the possibilities of a NRHP plaque, a 2019 celebration, and possible next steps after the news of acceptance,” Gregory said. If you would like to share ideas or volunteer with this committee, please contact the GWBHS at gina@gwbhs.com.
