Minority Population Grows in Oakland County
Last year saw growth in Hispanics and Asians in Oakland County.

Oakland County, MI – Oakland County continued to see growth in its minority population last year, according to U.S. Census estimates released Thursday.
The Detroit News reported that Oakland County saw a small decrease in blacks but gains in Asian and Hispanics last year.
Asians are 6.9 percent of Oakland County residents, an increase of 2,745, and Hispanics make up 3.9 percent of the population, an increase of 1,193.

“That sort of matches what we know about Michigan,” said state demographer Eric Guthrie, citing the growth in Asian and Hispanic populations statewide.

The white population is on the decrease in Oakland County, declining by 1,934.
The census report also showed Michigan’s overall population is aging. Michigan’s median age is 39.7 years. In 2010, Michigan’s median age was 38.9 years.
The national median age is 37.8 years.
