In "A Far Cry … From Home," Sandy Richards seeks to help other parents who have experienced the loss of a child.

Michigan native Sandy Richards will talk about grief recovery and independent publishing at 7 p.m. Tuesday, March 3, at the West Bloomfield Main Library.

Richards seeks to heal and offer hope to those who have struggled with losing a child through her memoir, A Far Cry… From Home (released September 2013 from Friesen Press).

The grief recovery story was a finalist in the National Indie Excellence Awards in May 2014, awarded an Honorable Mention in the Readers’ Favorite International Book Awards in September 2014 and an Honorable Mention in the New England Book Fair Awards announced in January 2015.

Award venues are open to independent authors and publishing giants alike and attract indie authors, New York Times bestsellers, and celebrity contestants from all over the world. With thousands of submissions in over 100 genres, Richards is proud that A Far Cry…From Home has earned Honorable Mention accolades.

“When my son passed away, I promised him that I would keep his memory alive. Receiving an Honorable Mention award by Reader’s Favorite and other industry leaders has further fueled my desire to help others along their grief journey.”

She will also talk about the independent publishing method and offer insight into using memoir writing as a processing and coping method for grief recovery. After losing her son in a fatal car accident, Richards shares her journey – a memoir written with a twist. The story is told from her deceased son’s viewpoint – that of an angel. Books will be available for purchase at the event.

“Upon reading A Far Cry…From Home, my hope is that people will become enveloped in my world for a short time. After finishing the book, perhaps they will have caught a glimpse of the ray of hope glimmering through the loss that death leaves in its wake. I’m compelled to share my journey with others. I want to help them and to let them know that healing is possible.”
