Police Fatally Shoot Man Who Attacked His Family At Highland Twp. Condo: Sheriff

Officers fatally shot a man who killed his father-in-law and injured his mother-in-law and wife at an Oakland County condo, officials said.

HIGHLAND TOWNSHIP, MI — A man was fatally shot Wednesday morning in a confrontation with police during a domestic dispute at a Highland Township condo, according to the Oakland County Sheriff's Office.

Officials said a 42-year-old Dearborn Heights man smashed through a sliding glass door at a condominium home on the 400 block of Delmar Court near South Milford Road, south of Michigan 59 at 8:33 a.m. with a 9 mm handgun and attacked his wife with "murderous intent."

The couple's 8-year-old child called police as the wife ran to an upstairs bedroom carrying their 1-year-old baby, while her mother and father confronted the gunman inside the home, officials said.

The gunman fatally shot his father-in-law, 69, who police believe was reaching for a weapon, and injured his mother-in-law, 70, before attacking his wife in the upstairs bedroom, officials said.

Officers arrived minutes later and immediately rushed into the home where they heard screaming and a gunshot from the bedroom, officials said.

Officers found the gunman struggling with his wife and demanded he "drop everything," to which the man ignored, leading officers to fire multiple rounds, fatally striking him, officials said.

The wife, 37, was wounded by a gunshot and taken, along with her mother, to a nearby hospital where they are expected to be ok, officials said.

Three children were in the home during the violence and were not injured. Two of the children, ages 4 and 1, belonged to the gunman and his wife, while the 8-year-old was a cousin, officials said.

The cousin was returned home, and the two other children are staying with other relatives, officials said.

The wife recently moved out of their Dearborn Heights home recently and was staying with her parents at the Highland Township condo, officials said.

The gunman had multiple run-ins with law enforcement, including drug and felonious assault convictions, officials said.

Police were also recently called to the home in Dearborn Heights on complaints of family trouble, larceny, domestic violence and malicious destruction of property, officials said.

Since the gunman, his wife and the children who were present share the same surname, their names were not released by police.

"It’s hard for me to wrap my head around an individual who can go to the home of someone he professed to love – at least some point in his life – with the intent to kill them," Sheriff Michael Bouchard said. "Preliminary information leads me to believe that our deputies saved lives today and rushed towards the gunfire. I’m very proud every day of what they do, but today puts an exclamation point on it."
