Father’s Day is the one day a year that we pay tribute to the man that helped shape who we are today. As I reflect back on the day, I realized that without my dad, I would have never learned how to drive a stick shift, bait a hook, fix the car or replace my water heater. I learned it was ok if the BBQ grill caught fire while he was cooking, after all that is where the term flame broiled came from. It was my dad that taught me to work hard and take responsibility for my actions. He taught me to keep track of my money…by this I mean every time I asked to borrow money he would say, “What happen to yours, boy?”
With 7 kids of my own, I use to look for the teachable moments and then I realized my kids are learning from me every moment we are together. As a friend of mine always says, “Are they learning what to do or what not to do?” I would like to believe that they are always learning what to do, but the reality is, I am not perfect so I am confident there are plenty of lesson of what not to do mixed in.
