Trump To Speak On Economy In Metro Detroit Monday: What To Know

MILFORD, MI — President Donald Trump will visit the metro Detroit area Monday as early voting is now underway for Michigan's Aug. 4 primary.

Trump will visit the General Motors' Milford Proving Ground, which is a vast vehicle testing facility in Milford, according to White House officials.

He is expected to speak during the afternoon hours and focus on manufacturing and job growth, and a new round of tariffs on Canada.

The tariffs and his visit to Milford come on the same day the Gordie Howe International Bridge opens to traffic.

Canadian officials dropped out of a ribbon-cutting ceremony that was planned between both nations last Friday to celebrate the bridge's opening.

Trump had demanded in a social media post that Canada hand over at least half ownership of the new bridge to the U.S. government.

He claimed in a social media post that the terms of the bridge toll collection were renegotiated.

"Canada disinvited the United States of America to the opening of the Gordie Howe Bridge, which is fine, considering they are paying substantial TARIFFS to the United States, but the original Deal on the Bridge, which was terribly negotiated by a previous Administration, no longer stands," Trump said in a Truth Social post. "We changed the terms of the Deal so that the United States of America now gets 50 percent of the Profit."

Trump is also expected to stump for U.S. Rep. John James to be the next governor of Michigan. James is locked in a heated primary against businessman Perry Johnson.

Trump also favors U.S. Senate candidate Mike Rogers, who is running unopposed in the state's Republican primary. Rogers, who narrowly lost to Elissa Slotkin for Senate in 2024, will face the winner of the Democratic primary.

Trump won Michigan in 2024 after losing the state in 2020. He also carried Michigan in 2016.
