Bicyclist Seriously Injured Oakland County Crash: Sheriff

The driver stayed at the scene and is cooperating with investigators, officials said.

COMMERCE TOWNSHIP, MI — A bicyclist was seriously injured in a crash involving an SUV Wednesday morning in Commerce Township, according to sheriff's officials.

The crash happened at 6:16 a.m. Wednesday in the area of West Maple Road and the Michigan Air Line Trail crossing near Grandview Drive in Commerce Township, officials said.

A 65-year-old Walled Lake woman was driving a 2008 GMC Envoy that was moving northwest on West Maple Road toward the crossing, officials said.

At the same time, a 48-year-old Commerce Township man was riding a Trek bicycle across the marked crosswalk when he was hit by the SUV, officials said.

Investigators determined the bicyclist failed to yield to the oncoming GMC and rode into the vehicle's path, resulting in the collision.

The man suffered critical injuries and was taken to Henry Ford Hospital–Novi where he remains in critical condition, officials said.

He was wearing a helmet at the time of the crash, officials said.

The driver of the GMC was not injured in the crash. She remained at the scene and is fully cooperating with investigators, officials said.

It was unclear if she was wearing a seatbelt, but investigators do not believe speed, alcohol, or drugs were factors in the crash.

Officials were still investigating the crash.
